If you pull the engine yourself and take it to the shop, it will run at least 1200 bucks for stock rebuild with new pistons, rings, cam, oil pump, lifters, bearings and seals, timming chain and sprocket.

Scoggins Dickey sales them for $1499 for cars and trucks from 1969 to 1987. Their web address is:
sdparts.com or google them.

There are some really good speciality engine re-builders out there and the prices would vary quite a bit but I’d say from 800 to over 2,000 bucks and if you know they offer a full warranty bec they deal mostly 350′s etc that is a real bonus and some shops will sell you a rebuilt cheaper then even they charge to rebuild yours.

Just be careful bec the block etc might be better on yours then the rebuilt engine’s and if your engine has been a really good engine you might want it rebuilt.

You might want to check around with some auto storage yards and auto wreckers they might have a vehicle with a terrible body etc but a recently fully rebuilt engine in it.I do know that those engines are liked a lot and many ppl rebuild them and many have engines like those to sell etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you can find a engine with a full extended warranty even if you have to give more money the warranty is well worth it in the long run especially if you plan on keeping that vehicle awhile.

I perfer to rebuild than to buy a crate motor…For the price of a crate you can add better parts to the engine that you are rebuilding…Cam,Double roller timing chain, and bore it out to what you want..I rebuilt a 4 bolt main for my landcruiser for about 1300.00…And I know what I got!!!!By the way it,s a made in usa block…

I picked up a crate motor from the dealership for $1700.00 it had a new oil pan and valve covers, timing cover all there even a new Harmonic Balance, all I used of my old engine was the intake and exhaust manifolds, bolted it right in and it cam with a 50.000 mile warranty so if it gets an oil leak anywhere but the intake they fix it,
you could rebuild your old one but if some of those parts are worn out you ll be spending more.

From my experience it is by far cheaper to buy a re-manufactured engine than to try and rebuild your. On an older engine most likely will have to rebore cylinder and install larger pistons, install new cam bearings and than have crankshaft trued up. A lot of machine work which is expensive. Take the cheap route and just throw a set of rings, and bearings in the engine and hope for the best. about $250 in parts.

Gene, how is it cheaper to buy a re-man than to rebuild your own?

Remans start at about $800 for run of the mill basic low compression, low HP 350′s and go up to about $1900 for a mild crate engine

Machine work needed to rebuild an engine
$75-125 to bore and hone
$40-60 to hot tank clean
30-40 to install cam bearings and frost plugs
30-40 to pin fit pistons on rods
$80-130 to turn crank (only 40-50 to polish if turning aint needed)
60 to resize rod big ends

Going in the middle thats $380 of machine work

Northern auto parts has a NICE full rebuild kit for $190

So that’s $570

Have stock heads cleaned and machined as needed for about $200 or buy used vortec heads for about $400
