@transam579 there’s no replacement for displacement

Hey Big Thirsty! Can you put all the engine specs somewhere? I have a 283 in my 66 El Camino and want to get as much power out of it.

TannerDee @ 7:29 am #

WHAT KIND OF COMPRESSION WILL IT HAVE.

RandomMEEP @ 7:51 am #

283′s are great, we have one bored out to 302 cu, at it runs 9.12 at 151 MPH. there tough little motors.

spikonaleash @ 8:10 am #

DUDE put that in my little isuzu WOOT!!!

I have a 67 block in my 57 Chevy stepside truck and its a little go-getter! Almost faster than my stock 98 Chevy truck… It’s a new project so I’m not sure if it has any mods…Soon enough and I’ll be digging into it to see..

gday mate, what sort of carby do you recomend for a 283 with mild cam and headers? cheers Chris. I had one with 750 holley. Fast.

tahwnikcufos @ 9:35 am #

@80aussiepride08 IMO… any 4 barrel around 500 to 550 cfm is good, the newer Quadra Jet clones are the easiest to set up and tune.

tahwnikcufos @ 9:56 am #

@Bornn368 It’s possible, but you’ll have a lot of money in machine work and the valve train, an all roller set-up is a must… along with a full balance. Even the best hydraulic lifters will still float around 7 or 8 grand. Mine was happy at 6 to 7 grand and was perfect for a 2000 lb or lighter car.

tahwnikcufos @ 10:42 am #

@bigdon2241; you’re talking about some of the ”67 blocks, I had one, great block, instant RPM and plenty of HP with a modest carb – great for dueces or other small cars, had mine in a Triumph GT6 – like driving a Ferrari GTO or a Cobra.

DBLCC @ 11:01 am #

.60 over for 292cu in was preferred for older blocks but I built a couple of 302′s out of later 283′s. 12,000 rpm would have you searching for your pistons in the next county. 8,000 was realistic though.

bigdon2241 @ 11:16 am #

some 283 can be bored out 0.125 over to 4 inches and fit 302 piston in it

76jans @ 11:43 am #

nice little motor I am swaping one into my93 chevy stepside 4×4 I am replacing the stock 4.3 v6 with the 283 small block

rompn4x @ 12:00 pm #

283′s are screamers, my buddy had one in is 65 Malibu. Ported 283 heads and a modest cam and it pull good at the top end.

ls6guy @ 12:09 pm #

now thats nice

BigThirsty1 @ 12:42 pm #

We use Edlebrock carbs, unless customer prefers to fit their own i.e. Holley.

Bornn368 @ 2:28 pm #

Yes there would be a warranty issue, just a rumor you i heard on the matter you know how those are.

BigThirsty1 @ 3:20 pm #

I have not heard this, but would probably invalidate the warranty ………

Bornn368 @ 4:13 pm #

Supposedly they can handle 12,000 before the can go boom have you heard of this?

adapon82 @ 4:24 pm #

i have a 283 in my 78 Malibu, its a tough little fucker, i drive it pretty hard. i did some mild mods on it and got it to put out around 300 hp.

ohtoowrx @ 4:47 pm #

First motor I ever built was a 283 out of a 1964 impala 2door. Couldn’t find pistons bigger than a .060 with 12 to 1 compression so thats as big as it ever got. Put a solid roller cam in it. I missed a shift and hit 8500 rpms once and didn’t seem to hurt.

madtownmadman @ 5:26 pm #

Early 283′s have really thick cylinder walls, and can be bored out to 4.00″, like a 327 and 350. A 4″ bore with a 3″ stroke yields 302″. With a bore that size, you can run valves bigger than 1.94″I 1.50″E Vortec heads would be an excellent update. If you bore the motor out that much, just get pistons for a Chevy 302. Later 283′s can’t be bored to 4″, but I’m not sure what the cutoff year is. If you’re not looking to rebuild the whole engine, just go with a mild cam, intake, and headers.

transam579 @ 5:50 pm #

283 does get a little better stock. 283 has smaller main journals so there is less drag on the crank. They also have steel cranks from the factory. ide take a 283 over a 350 any day

lee538 @ 6:45 pm #

how would i look up to make a 67 283 a lil faster
