with the tick could it be lifters ticking?

low oil will cause ticking. as for where the oil is going if there is no visible signs of a leak, it is burning it. as for the ticking if it only does it when the engine is cold then its really no worries.

my 305 does the same thing

The noise is caused by piston slap! The pistons expand in the cylinder by 3 or 4 thousanths of an inch as they heat up and the noise goes away. The oil burning MAY be damaged piston rings but if you have ever looked down and seen your temperature guage read full broil that would explain the piston noise and the damaged rings, that kind of damage is what happens to 454 chevys when they have been overheated!!!

the clickking is caused from the oil being cold and a little thiker then normal, the valves are tapeing untill engine warms enuuf to flow freely so look in to lighter oil formolated to ur temp rang of ur area ask auto stores or the closed dear of the vichel it free info and can help out to ok

you dont say how old but lifters tick on most chevy’s fairly normal the older it gets no big deal could run a lot of miles like that …..but as for the oil disappearing then its burnning it if no leaks take a look at the tail pipe if its black and wet then there you go just wore out

If it is a 8.1 big block there is a problem with them using oil. It is burning it. You will not see it smoke because the catalytic converter cleans it up. Mine used 1 qt. per every 1000 miles. Chevy will not do anything for you because they say it is normal for a engine to use 1 qt. for every 100 gallons of fuel. This truck only got 10mpg. NORMAL???? NOT TO ME !!!CHEVY SUCKS !!!! Sold mine the next week.

Piston slap or valve chatter, both go away when the engine heats up because the pieces expand
